Real-time drug detection using a diathermic knife combined to rapid evaporative ionisation mass spectrometry

Fast, accurate and sensitive detection of drugs in human tissue is crucial importance an investigation a suspicious death. Here, we aimed to screen cocaine, diazepam, methadone morphine post-mortem muscle samples without sample preparation quasi-real time using rapid evaporative ionisation mass spectrometry (REIMS). REIMS enables the online MS analysis vapours generated from dissection by diathermic knife. Human were soaked solutions 4 at different concentrations multiple incubation times check feasibility for this innovative application. Muscle blank saline used as control. The classification model was able distinguish between 30 μg g−1 cocaine (m/z 304.2), 200 286.2), 10 310.2) diazepam 285.1). tandem confirmed that peaks contributed class separation, originated interest. As proof-of-concept, forensic case overdose investigated REIMS. our model, recognition software detect methadone, demonstrating method opens new possibilities toxicology during autopsy, leading faster crime solving decreased costs.
